Beautiful, crimson flowers appear on these tall, green, spikes in mid to late summer and into fall. Plants grow 1.5-2' tall with showy red blooms above the foliage that attract hummingbirds & butterflies. Hardy to zone 4 and not invasive.
Cardinal Flower grows well in moist soil and full sun in northern climates, part shade in the southern states. Keep soil moist. Mulch soil to help keep plants consistently moist if above the waterline. Mulching in the fall will help keep plants from heaving in the winter north of zone 5. The plants can grow from 2 or 3 inches below the water line, but grow best slightly above the water line.
